Once upon a time, there was this guy who was very much in love with his girlfriend. One time, this guy folded 1,000 pieces of paper cranes as a gift to his girl. They were very happy together. At that time the guy had just started working in his company at a very lowly position and his future didn’t seem bright.
One day, his girlfriend told him that she was going to Paris and will never come back again. She told him that she cannot visualize any bright future for the both of them. Hence it was best that they parted and went their own separate ways.
The poor guy was heartbroken. Later on when he regained his confidence, he decided to work hard day and night, while upgrading his knowledge through night classes. Finally all the hard work paid off. With the help of some friends, he set up his own company. Over time, he became very wealthy & successful. However deep inside, he wished that one day he could show his ex-girlfriend what she had missed out on.
One rainy day, while the guy was driving his BMW, he saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella, walking in the rain hurrying towards some destination. Even It didn’t take him long to realize they were his ex-girlfriend’s parents. This was his chance at getting back at them. He drove slowly alongside the couple, wanting them to spot him in his luxury car. He wanted them to know that he was not the same man any more. Now he had his own company, car, condo, etc. He has made it !
What he saw next confused him. The couple was walking towards a cemetery. So he got out of his car and followed them and then he saw his girl, a photograph of her smiling sweetly as ever at him, from her tombstone. He also saw his 1000 paper cranes right beside the tomb.
Just then her parents saw him. He asked them what had happened. They explained, that she did not leave for France at all. She was found to be terminally ill with cancer. She had always believed that the guy would make it someday, and she did not want to be his obstacle. Therefore she had chosen to leave him. She had wanted her parents to put the 1000 paper cranes on her tomb to have him close to her.
The guy wept. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside her knowing you can’t have her, see her or ever be with her again.
